The neighbourhood sits directly below a natural escarpment, informally known as the “cliff,” formed as Calgary expanded into this area.
In the early 1900's, street planners named Cliff Street after this escarpment, anchoring the area’s identity.
Around 1909–1910, the area was designed with a mix of Garden City layouts and Edwardian-style “bungalow” homes, many with deep setbacks and tree-lined streets.
A landmark school built in 1920, called Cliff Bungalow School, combined the escarpment name and “bungalow” architectural style. In the 1970's, the community formally adopted its name from this school.
