HISTORY NOTE
The area known as Killary/Glengarry in Calgary gets its name from a combination of Irish and Scottish heritage references, reflecting a common naming tradition used in Calgary’s mid-20th-century neighbourhood development.
“Killary” is named after Killary Harbour (or Killary Fjord) on the west coast of Ireland, one of Europe’s few fjords. The name comes from the Irish An Caoláire Rua, often interpreted as “the red narrow sea.” Using Irish place names was popular in Calgary when many neighbourhoods were being planned and named.
“Glengarry” comes from Glengarry County in Scotland, and more broadly from the Scottish word glen (meaning valley). It is also associated with the historic Glengarry Highlanders, a well-known Scottish regiment, which added a sense of tradition and heritage to the name.
