The name "Okotoks" is derived from the Blackfoot word "ohkotok," meaning "rock." This refers to the notable Okotoks Erratic, or "Big Rock," a significant glacial erratic located west of the town. The Blackfoot people used this landmark to navigate & find river crossings in the area.
In the late 19th century, Okotoks emerged as a vital stop along the Macleod Trail, a key route connecting Fort Macleod & Fort Calgary. The establishment of a sawmill in 1891 spurred further growth, leading to the town's development around this burgeoning industry.
The Okotoks Museum & Archives, established in 2000, is dedicated to preserving the town's rich heritage, showcasing artefacts & celebrating the stories of its past. Okotoks is steeped in First Nation History
