With its rolling hills and wooded acreages located North West of the City and East of Cochrane on Highway 1A in Rocky View County. The Bearspaw area is immediately East of the Glendale community, North of the Bow River and in the Municipal District of Rural Rocky View County. The journey to Downtown Calgary is shorter than you think with access to the New Stoney Trail Ring Road and the LRT minutes away.
Here's an overview of its historical development:
Stoney Nakoda Origins: The area now known as Bearspaw was originally inhabited by the Stoney Nakoda people, who refer to themselves as "Nakoda," meaning "friend" or "ally."
Chief Masgwaahsid (Bear's Paw): The community's name honors Chief Masgwaahsid, also known as Bear's Paw, a prominent leader of the Stoney Nakoda Nation. He was a key figure during the signing of Treaty 7 in 1877, which established agreements between several First Nations and the British Crown.
Early Settlement and Development:
Canadian Pacific Railway Station (1909): The establishment of a railway station in 1909 marked the official naming of the area as Bearspaw. This development facilitated increased accessibility and growth.
Agricultural Roots: Early settlers, primarily dairy farmers, were attracted to Bearspaw's fertile lands. The community gradually expanded to include a mix of ranches, farms, and planned subdivisions.
Educational Milestones:
Bearspaw School (1920): In 1920, the first schoolhouse was constructed, featuring a single classroom. This school served the community until its closure in 1965.
Preservation Efforts: To preserve this historical landmark, the Bearspaw Historical Society was formed in 1973. The society successfully repurposed the schoolhouse, which now serves as a venue for various community events and activities.
Bearspaw Lifestyle Centre: This centre offers a range of activities and facilities, including a banquet hall, gymnasium, dance studio, and meeting rooms, catering to residents of all ages.
Historical Society Initiatives: The Bearspaw Historical Society continues to document and celebrate the area's rich history, ensuring that the legacy of its early inhabitants and developments is preserved for future generations.
Today, Bearspaw seamlessly blends its historical roots with modern living, offering residents a unique combination of rural charm and contemporary amenities.
Bearspaw School opened in 2002 in a peaceful rural setting for children from the Bearspaw area from ECS to Grade 8. Children who live in the surrounding areas are bussed to the school. High school age children are able to travel by bus to Cochrane.
