The community's name honours Chief Masgwaahsid, also known as Bear's Paw, a prominent leader of the Stoney Nakoda Nation. He was a key figure during the signing of Treaty 7 in 1877, which established agreements between several First Nations & the British Crown.
The establishment of a railway station in 1909 was the official naming of Bearspaw, & this gave more access & growth.
Early settlers, primarily dairy farmers, were attracted to Bearspaw's fertile lands. The community expanded to include Ranches, Farms, & Subdivisions.
To preserve this historical landmark, the Bearspaw Historical Society was formed in 1973. The society successfully repurposed the schoolhouse, which now serves as a venue for various community events.
This centre offers a range of activities & facilities, including a banquet hall, gymnasium, dance studio, & meeting rooms for residents of all ages.
The Bearspaw Historical Society continues to document & celebrate the area's rich history, ensuring that the legacy of its early inhabitants & developments is preserved for future generations.
