History:
Indigenous Inhabitants: Originally home to the Stoney Nakoda people, who are part of the larger Assiniboine & Sioux groups. The area was used for hunting, fishing & gathering by Indigenous people.
European Settlement: European fur traders arrived in the area in the late 1700's, with the Hudson’s Bay Company & North West Company Trading Posts nearby. Bearspaw was used as a transportation route for settlers travelling westward.
Bearspaw’s Name Origin: The name "Bearspaw" is believed to derive from a local Native American leader, the Stoney Nakoda chief named Chief Bearspaw, one of the signatories of Treaty 7 in 1877, a major treaty between the Canadian government & several First Nations of southern Alberta. His name also lives on in the Bearspaw area northwest of Calgary with Bearspaw School, Bearspaw Reservoir & other local landmarks.
19th Century Growth: The area started seeing more permanent settler activity in the mid-1800's. Agricultural development began to expand in the late 1800's.
Early 1900's: Bearspaw was a rural farming community with small-scale agriculture & ranching. The arrival of the Calgary & Edmonton Railway line spurred further growth.
Area Structure Plan (ASP), originally adopted in 1994, has been under review to address evolving community needs and growth. This comprehensive review aims to create an updated land use strategy that aligns with current municipal policies & reflects residents' vision for the future. As of January 28, 2025, a public hearing was held to discuss the proposed ASP, with further amendments scheduled for presentation by the end of April 2025.
