Hillhurst & West Hillhurst two adjacent communities in Calgary's northwest, each with distinct Histories & Characteristics. Lets take a look at their History
Hillhurst, established in 1914, is one of Calgary's oldest neighbourhoods. The area was first settled in the 1880's, with Felix McHugh establishing a homestead in 1883. In 1904, Ezra Riley sold the land to the City, donating 20 acres for what is now Riley Park. The community was developed with 25-foot lots, selling for about $300 each in 1907. Hillhurst has evolved into a vibrant inner-city area, known for its tree-lined streets, Historic Homes & closeness to the Kensington shopping district.
West Hillhurst, located just west of Hillhurst, was annexed by Calgary in 1907. Development began in earnest after 1945, with many homes built as "Victory Homes" for soldiers returning from World War II. These homes, originally intended as temporary, have become a lasting part of the Community's character. The construction of Crowchild Trail in the 1960's bisected the area, influencing its development. Today, West Hillhurst is recognised for trendy fun atmosphere, green space, & all the things that make Communities great. Here is an overview.
