BEARSPAW COMMUNITY OVERVIEW & DESIGNATED SCHOOLS

Bearspaw, Rocky View County, Alberta

Indigenous Heritage:

Stoney Nakoda Origins:

  • The area now known as Bearspaw was originally inhabited by the Stoney Nakoda people, who refer to themselves as "Nakoda," meaning "friend" or "ally."

Chief Masgwaahsid (Bear's Paw):

  • The community's name honors Chief Masgwaahsid, also known as Bear's Paw, a prominent leader of the Stoney Nakoda Nation. He was a key figure during the signing of Treaty 7 in 1877, which established agreements between several First Nations and the British Crown.

The Name "Bearspaw"

  • The name comes from a prominent Stoney Nakoda Chief named Chief Masgwaahisd, which translates to Bear’s Paw in English. He was a respected leader of the Bearspaw band, one of the three groups that make up the Stoney Nakoda Nation in Alberta. The area was named in his honour, reflecting the region’s Indigenous heritage & its connection to the Stoney people, who have lived in the foothills & mountains of Alberta for generations.

EARLY DAYS & DEVELOPMENT

Canadian Pacific Railway Station (1909):

  •  The establishment of a railway station in 1909 marked the official naming of the area as Bearspaw. This development facilitated increased accessibility & growth.

Agricultural Roots:

  • Early settlers, primarily dairy farmers, were attracted to Bearspaw's fertile lands.  It then gradually expanded to include ranches, farms & subdivisions.

  •  In 1920, the first schoolhouse was constructed, featuring a single classroom. This school served the community until its closure in 1965.

Preservation Efforts:

  • To preserve this historical landmark, the Bearspaw Historical Society was formed in 1973. The society successfully repurposed the schoolhouse, which now serves as a venue for various community events & activities. Today's Bearspaw School opened in 2002 in a peaceful rural setting for children from the Bearspaw area from ECS to Grade 8. Children who live in the surrounding areas are bussed to the school. High school age children are able to travel by bus to Cochrane.

Summary:

  • Bearspaw seamlessly blends its historical roots with modern living, offering residents a unique combination of rural charm and contemporary amenities.

New Stoney Trail Ring Road Access:

  • The new Stoney Trail Ring Road around Calgary significantly enhances access to Rural areas by providing faster, more efficient routes to & from the City.
