Many neighborhoods cater to families, with lots of parks, schools, and recreational facilities. Communities like Forest Lawn, Radisson Heights, and Dover offer a more suburban feel, with a strong sense of community.
East Calgary has a rich cultural mix, with residents from various backgrounds, especially in areas like Forest Lawn, where you'll find a range of ethnic restaurants, shops, and markets.
Compared to areas in the Downtown core or West Calgary, East Calgary is generally more affordable, making it appealing for first-time homebuyers or those looking for larger properties at a lower price point.
The area is well-connected by Public Transit, and residents benefit from access to major roads like Deerfoot Trail and Memorial Drive, making commuting to the city center or other parts of Calgary relatively easy.
All Calgary CTrain, Red Line & Blue Line, and forthcoming Green Line.
The Calgary Green Line is a future light rail transit (LRT) line that will eventually run 46 kms from Seton in the southeast to 160 Avenue N. in the north. The project is being built in phases, with Phase 1 construction starting this past summer 2025. This initial phase will cover 18 kms from Shepard to Eau Claire, with 13 stations, and is expected to be completed in six years. The full project aims to connect communities, provide faster transit, and improve access to key destinations like the South Health Campus and a future connection to the YYC Calgary International Airport.
East Calgary offers plenty of parks, walking trails, and green spaces, such as the popular Fish Creek Provincial Park (a little farther south) and the variety of smaller neighborhood parks.
As Calgary continues to develop, East Calgary is seeing increasing investment in commercial and retail spaces, making it more self-sufficient and vibrant in terms of services.
St. Rose of Lima Junior High School: faith-based learning.
Father Lacombe High School: Located more to the southeast.
Calgary Islamic School (Omar Bin Al-Khattab Campus): Grades K-12.
The community has a strong local flavor, with a range of ethnic restaurants, small businesses, and community events that reflect its multicultural makeup. East Calgary also features a more affordable cost of living compared to more upscale areas of the city, making it a popular choice for first-time homebuyers, families, and young professionals.
Although the area is undergoing revitalization, with new developments and renovations happening in certain neighborhoods, it maintains a relatively laid-back, residential vibe. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy nearby parks like the beautiful Pearce Estate Park, and there's access to pathways along the Bow River for cycling or walking.
